Parts of a sentence

The vital parts of a sentence.

1. The subject

2. The predicate

The Subject can contain: Determiners and nouns.

The Predicate can contain: Verb, adverbial, and complement/object.

💡Remember: A sentence can also be called a statement.

Let's analyse some sentences.

1. He is a boy.

He - the subject

Is - a verb; acting as a linker/linking verb.

A boy - the compliment.

Note: There is no object here. *A boy* is only complimenting *He*

2. Steve killed the two black snakes.

Steve - the subject (because he is the one that did the action)

Killed - A main *verb*. Also the past tense of *kill*

The two black snakes - the object (because they are the ones Steve did something to)

Note: *The two black* must be chosen as the object with *snake* not only snake. Because they are modifiers.

3. We go to school every day.

We - the subject.

Go to - the predicate, containing the verb *go* and preposition *to*

School - the object

Everyday - the adverbial. Adverb of frequency. Telling us how often we go to school.
